Early Exacerbations Tied to Poor Outcomes in Cystic Fibrosis

In a registry-based study, pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) affected nearly one third of children with cystic fibrosis in the first 3 years of life and were linked to lower lung function at age 6 and lower BMI at age 3. The risk was higher with Medicaid coverage, pancreatic insufficiency, and a diagnosis of asthma before the age of 3 but lower with exclusive breastfeeding before the age of 6 months.
