Eugene Braunwald, MD, widely recognized as the father of modern cardiology for his transformative impact on cardiovascular medicine, died April 22. He was 96.

Over a 74-year career, Braunwald reshaped how physicians understand and treat heart disease through groundbreaking discoveries, landmark clinical trials, and mentorship of generations of cardiologists.
“He was a legend of all legends: the ‘father of modern cardiology,’” Roxana Mehran, MD, president of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), said in a statement. “His contributions span decades and his legacy will live on with all of the many lives he touched though his work as a clinician, researcher, mentor, teacher, editor and academic leader/administrator.”
Redefining Heart Attack Treatment
What Braunwald called his major achievement began in the 1960s, when conventional wisdom held that, during a heart attack, heart muscle died instantly. Braunwald and his colleagues showed the process was gradual, raising the possibility of early intervention to prevent damage.
The finding was first published in Circulation in 1971 and fundamentally changed emergency cardiac care. His research pioneered the concept of myocardial reperfusion therapy and opened the door to modern heart attack treatment, from thrombolytic therapy to percutaneous coronary intervention.
In 1984, Braunwald founded the Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. More than 70 TIMI trials involving over 400,000 patients established tissue plasminogen activator for treating acute myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, demonstrated the benefit of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with statins, and helped show that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors could reduce post-MI mortality by 19%. All three therapies became standard care.
Discoveries That Defined a Disease
Braunwald’s career mirrored the evolution of medical research. Born in Vienna in 1929, he and his family fled the Nazis in 1938 and eventually settled in New York. There, he graduated at the top of his class from NYU School of Medicine in 1952.
Six years later, one of his earliest achievements came after what could have been seen as a career-ending mistake. As a young researcher at the National Heart Institute (NHI) in 1958, Braunwald recommended heart surgery for a patient based on readings suggesting congenital obstruction. During the operation, the surgeon found no obstruction. He summoned Braunwald to the operating room.
“Morrow says, ‘Gene, you’ve messed up,’” Braunwald recalled in a 2024 interview with the American Heart Association (AHA), referring to Dr Andrew Glenn Morrow, the NHI’s chief of heart surgery.
When the scenario repeated with another patient 2 months later, Braunwald and Morrow investigated further. Their 1959 paper in Circulation showed that severe thickening of the heart’s walls caused the obstruction. Five years later, a landmark study they published in the same journal established hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as a unique clinical entity. The condition is relatively common, and surgical treatments they pioneered, including septal myectomy, remain in use today.
Shaping Generations of Cardiologists
In 1972, Braunwald became physician-in-chief at what was then the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and chair of the department of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Over 24 years as chair, he built the program into one of the nation’s premier centers for internal medicine. In 1996, he became chief academic officer and a founding trustee of Partners HealthCare System, now Mass General Brigham.
He also wrote and edited influential textbooks that shaped medical education globally. “Braunwald’s Heart Disease,” first published in 1980, became the definitive reference in cardiology, used by generations of physicians worldwide. Now in its 13th edition, it remains the standard. He also edited “Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine” for 12 editions.
Braunwald authored over 1800 publications. He continued publishing as recently as this month, with work appearing in the journal Heart Rhythm.
“All cardiologists today have been touched by Dr Braunwald through the training they received in the past and the classical textbooks and review articles they continue to use,” said Elliott Antman, MD, a longtime colleague and mentee who is a professor of medicine and senior clinician/investigator at the Mass General Brigham Heart and Vascular Institute.

“What set him apart even more was the time he took to listen to individuals with whom he was interacting and personalize his advice and recommendations for them,” added Antman, a former president of the AHA. “To find a single person who combines scientific mastery and the warm personal touch is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something that is to be treasured forever.”
In recognition of his mentorship, the AHA created the Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award in 1999. The ACC awarded him its Distinguished Scientist and Lifetime Achievement awards. He received honorary doctorates from over 20 institutions, including the University of Oxford and the University of Vienna.
A Passion for Life and Discovery
Braunwald met his wife, Nina Starr, while they were pre-med students at NYU. After getting married in 1952, Nina Starr Braunwald became a pioneering cardiac surgeon, the first woman in the field. She died in 1992. Braunwald later married Elaine Smith, former chief operating officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; three daughters, Karen Braunwald, PhD, Allison Goldfine, MD, and Jill Braunwald Porter, JD; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Beyond medicine, Braunwald was a passionate opera enthusiast. His parents met at the opera in Vienna, and he began attending performances there at age 6. As a college student in New York, he appeared as an extra at the Metropolitan Opera.
In 2024, Braunwald told the AHA that his ongoing curiosity motivated him to continue working into his mid-90s. “The questions change,” he said. “They’ve become bigger questions.”
He expressed particular interest in advances in genetics, primordial prevention, and neuroscience. “I think this is a very exciting time in cardiology,” he told AHA, “and I wish I could keep going, because it’s so interesting.”
