GLP-1 QOL Benefits Greatest for Those With Obesity Plus T2D

TOPLINE:

Patients with comorbid obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) had more favorable quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes taking a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) therapy than those with either condition alone or multiple comorbidities.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Researchers analyzed data from 1370 patients taking a GLP-1 with or without comorbid T2D from the Ipsos Obesity Consumer Monitor online survey. Of the participants included in the analysis, there were 110 patients with obesity alone; 53 with obesity and T2D without additional comorbidities; 40 with T2D alone; and 254 with obesity, T2D, and additional comorbidities.
  • The impact of treatment on patient-reported outcomes, which included various QOL indicators, was assessed using statements rated on a 7-point Likert scale.

TAKEAWAY:

  • Patients with obesity and T2D, but without additional comorbidities, reported greater improvements across multiple QOL dimensions compared with patients with obesity alone, T2D or obesity alone, or with obesity, T2D, and additional comorbidities.
  • Patients with both conditions also reported significantly higher energy levels vs the other groups (mean 4.85 vs 4.20-4.38 across all other groups; P < .05) and demonstrated greater improvements in healthy eating behaviors, food preparation frequency, exercise, self-confidence, and perceived positive impact on other coexisting conditions.

IN PRACTICE:

“Patients with both [obesity and T2D] may be particularly well-suited for GLP-1 therapy and clinicians can set expectations for meaningful [QOL] improvements beyond weight and glycemic endpoints,” the authors wrote.

SOURCE:

Ayse Levent of Ipsos presented the findings at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2026 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, Louisiana.

LIMITATIONS:

Findings were from an online survey and relied on patient self-report.

DISCLOSURES:

The authors of this study are employees of Ipsos, and they declared no conflicts of interest.
