Hypnotic Therapy Tied to Reduced Spinal Cord Injury Pain

TOPLINE:

Hypnotic cognitive therapy, which combines cognitive behavioral therapy with clinical hypnosis, was linked to a significantly greater reduction in pain intensity and depressive symptom scores than usual care in adults with moderate-to-severe chronic pain after spinal cord injury (SCI), a new study showed.

METHODOLOGY:

  • A single-blind, randomized, parallel-group trial conducted in 2019-2021 included more than 100 US adults (mean age, 51 years; 58% men; 79% White individuals) with moderate-to-severe chronic pain after SCI (mean years since injury, 15). All were randomly assigned to receive six weekly sessions of hypnotic cognitive therapy delivered by a clinical psychologist via telephone or video call (n = 64) or usual care (n = 63).
