On February 2, 2026, Medtronic announced three new developments for the company’s 780G automated insulin-delivery (AID) system — cleared for use last year by the US FDA in type 2 diabetes (T2D) — which will ease access and use of the system, according to a statement issued by the company.
First, the 780G system paired with Abbott’s 15-day Instinct sensor has been cleared by the FDA in people with insulin-requiring T2D, and second, Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans will cover this combination.
In addition, the FDA has cleared the 780G for use with the ultra rapid-acting insulins Fiasp (Novo Nordisk) and Lyumjev (Eli Lilly). The ultra rapid‑acting insulins are designed to better mimic natural pancreatic insulin secretion, minimizing postmeal high glucose levels.
“Bringing together the Instinct sensor, made by Abbott, with the well-established algorithm of the MiniMed 780G system makes for an extremely effective combination,” said Anders Carlson, MD, Associate Executive Director, International Diabetes Center, Minneapolis, in a Medtronic statement.
The 780G system automatically adjusts insulin pump delivery every 5 minutes, based on real-time sensor readings, helping to reduce both high and low glucose levels. It was first cleared for the US market in 2023 for people with type 1 diabetes aged 7 years or older, using an older Medtronic sensor.
Carlson added, “I think anyone who requires insulin therapy to manage their diabetes, whether it’s type 1 or type 2 diabetes, can benefit from AID. I’m thrilled that the MiniMed 780G system with the Instinct sensor is now cleared for this population, so that more people living with type 2 diabetes will get access to this life-changing technology improving their day-to-day experience in managing their diabetes.”
