Athletes in the vision-impaired category race with a guide; those in the sitting category use a sit-ski; and those in the standing category compete on their feet, with or without adaptations.
Here too classification serves to quantify the functional impact of the impairment on the technical action, not to establish an abstract hierarchy of disability. In biathlon, for example, the skiing component intertwines with the shooting component, and the system must account for how the impairment realistically affects both components. In cross-country skiing, propulsion, balance, coordination, use of the upper and lower limbs, and race technique management come into play.

Essentially, in Para ice hockey, classification works primarily as a regulatory gateway: It establishes who can compete in a sport whose structure and equipment already partially homogenize competition. It is a less visible approach to spectators but no less crucial for sporting fairness.
Gatekeeping, Not Classes
Wheelchair curling likewise centers largely on eligibility. International rules require that an athlete have an eligible impairment and meet the sport’s minimum impairment criteria; athletes who do not meet them are classified as not eligible. The rationale is clear: In wheelchair curling, the rules, equipment, and game format reduce the need to fragment competition into numerous classes.
For this reason, unlike in alpine skiing or snowboarding, spectators perceive classification less during the competition, but the classifiers’ work is still decisive beforehand because it defines who may enter the international competitive system and under what conditions.
Behind the Codes
Behind every code is a technical, not bureaucratic, process. Classification begins with medical documentation, continues with assessment by specialists, and can include observation in training or competition. At the end, the athlete receives not only a sport class but also a status indicating whether the classification is final or subject to review. This happens because some conditions can evolve or because additional observation in competition is needed.

Understanding classification also means gaining a deeper view of the sport.
