According to a recent study that points to sleep and chronic stress as potential underlying mechanisms, a child’s neighborhood socioeconomic environment may play a greater role in brain organization than hundreds of other measured factors.
Socioeconomic factors are increasingly recognized as important determinants of brain health, and environmental exposure throughout life is considered a modifiable risk factor for neurologic disease. Published in Science, this study found that neighborhood socioeconomic conditions had the strongest correlation with brain organization among the other variables examined in children. The associated brain pattern mirrored changes previously linked to sleep deprivation and chronic stress in sensory and motor regions while largely sparing higher-order cognitive areas in the frontal and parietal cortices.
Speaking with El Médico Interactivo, part of the Medscape Professional Network, on the findings, Jorge Matías-Guiu, MD, PhD, neurologist and head of neurology service at San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid, Spain, said the study’s most striking finding was that neighborhood socioeconomic conditions showed the strongest association with brain organization among the 649 variables analyzed, surpassing even intelligence quotient in children aged 9-10 years.
“The authors are not referring simply to household income but to the broader range of opportunities available within a child’s environment, including neighborhood socioeconomic conditions, access to resources, education, safety, public services, and healthy spaces,” he said.
These associations were observed in both functional brain connectivity and cortical thickness and were replicated across independent cohorts, strengthening the robustness of the findings.
Sleep and Stress
Because the study included children aged 9-10 years, it shows that these associations are already present by late childhood. However, it cannot determine when they first emerge.
“They most likely begin much earlier, possibly during early childhood or even fetal development because brain development is particularly sensitive to environmental influences during those stages,” Matías-Guiu said. “However, this study cannot determine precisely when these changes begin.”
The study identified neighborhood socioeconomic conditions as the individual factor most strongly associated with brain organization. The authors suggested that insufficient sleep and chronic stress are the most plausible biological pathways through which neighborhood conditions may influence brain development.
This does not mean that they are the only contributors. “In studies like this,” Matías-Guiu said, “many variables are closely interconnected, and one may mask the influence of another. Educational quality, nutrition, environmental pollution, exposure to violence, access to healthcare, and opportunities for development may also contribute.”
Because the study was cross-sectional, it could not determine which factors had the greatest influence or establish cause-and-effect relationships. However, it did identify sleep and chronic stress as promising targets for future intervention.
Brain Patterns
One of the most notable findings of this study is that the brain pattern associated with neighborhood socioeconomic conditions closely resembles patterns previously observed during sleep deprivation, heightened arousal, and physiologic stress. These conditions activate multiple neurotransmitter systems, which may influence brain development and neuroplasticity.
“It is important to emphasize that the study does not show that stress or sleep deprivation directly caused the observed brain changes,” Matías-Guiu said. “Rather, it shows that the brain pattern is remarkably similar to patterns previously described under those conditions.”
These effects were not distributed uniformly throughout the brain.
“That finding is biologically plausible because different brain regions have different vulnerabilities,” he said. “The strongest associations were observed in the primary visual, auditory, and motor cortices, whereas regions more closely associated with higher cognitive functions, such as the frontal and parietal cortices, were much less affected.”
Clinical Implications
Although the study did not directly evaluate clinical outcomes, it suggests that growing up in a less favorable socioeconomic environment may influence the brain systems involved in arousal regulation, sensory processing, and adaptation to environmental demands.
Together with other factors, these changes may contribute to later differences in learning, academic performance, and mental health.
The authors cautioned against a deterministic interpretation. Neighborhood socioeconomic conditions explain only part of the variation in brain organization, and, as they noted, “socioeconomic opportunity is not destiny.”
“Many children develop normally despite growing up under difficult circumstances,” Matías-Guiu said. “The implications of this study are therefore much greater at the societal level than at the individual level.”
Future Research
Whether these brain patterns can be modified through behavioral interventions remains uncertain. The authors suggested that improving sleep and reducing chronic stress are among the most promising interventions because both are modifiable and align with the biological patterns identified in the study.
However, they emphasized that longitudinal clinical trials are needed to determine whether these interventions can produce meaningful improvements in brain development.
Individual interventions should also be accompanied by policies that improve children’s living conditions because many of the identified determinants reflect environmental conditions rather than family behavior alone. Consequently, these findings have broader implications for education, public health, and socioeconomic policy than for individual clinical practices.
Matías-Guiu said the study conveys two important messages.
“First, it reminds us that social context is an integral part of developmental biology. Although this concept is not new, this study elegantly demonstrates it through neuroimaging. Second, it reinforces the idea that promoting healthy sleep, reducing childhood stress, and improving children’s environmental condition may benefit not only brain development but also society over the long term.”
